Homicide Expertise Grounded in Decades of Investigative and Command Experience
Dr. Nelson Andreu is a nationally recognized homicide expert witness and law enforcement consultant with more than 46 years of experience. He spent more than 20 years assigned to the Miami Police Department Homicide Unit, where he served as a Homicide Detective, Cold Case Detective, Homicide Supervisor, and, on several occasions, Acting Commander of the entire Homicide Unit for weeks and months at a time.
During his 25-year career with the Miami Police Department, Dr. Andreu investigated and supervised complex homicide cases, including serial and multiple-murder investigations. He was also detached to both the FBI and DEA to assist with major multiple-murder cases. His experience includes crime-scene assessment, interviews and interrogations, investigative planning, case management, cold-case review, supervisory oversight, and the evaluation of alleged investigative failures.
Dr. Andreu later served 15 years with the West Miami Police Department—seven years as Captain and second-in-command, followed by eight years as Chief of Police. He retired as Chief in 2020 and continues serving as a Reserve Commander. His command experience provides him with a practical understanding of police policy, training, supervision, administration, and accepted law enforcement practices.
Dr. Andreu has also served as an adjunct professor at Florida International University, Barry University, and Florida National University, teaching criminal law, criminal investigations, criminal evidence, criminological theory, the criminal justice system, and public administration.
